Losing a Family Member

January 15, 2010

A few days back I got a call from my parents informing me that one of our two golden retrievers was diagnosed with late stage lung cancer. Haley was uncomfortable and it was becoming pointless to keep her around for our own sake. With many tears shed, our family decided to put Haley down this morning.

Ours is a family that treats our pets like true members of the family. We don’t always like them, but we do love them.¬†Haley was one of those dogs that you could love, and like, unconditionally. Her personality was friendly, fun and she never demanded a moment of your attention, but was always grateful for any loving you could send her direction. She was always a cool calm and collected dog. She was brave, loved to swim, hated ambulance sirens, loved to play games with her sisters and had a fetish for anything soft and fuzzy (living or dead) to be in her mouth.

Our family will miss her terribly. Losing a special pet is sometimes just as bad as losing a human family member. She provided the same love and support that any living being ever could. She always found a way to put a smile on everyone’s faces. Enjoy some of my favorite photos of Haley.

She was never in a hurry. Relaxed is a good way to describe her.

She loved sitting in the leaves or grass and just watching the world around her.

She had the most beautiful face. So deep and thoughtful.

She was being playful with the camera this day.

And she loved playing games with her sister, Salem (left).

I know why they say that dogs are “mans best friend”. Your pictures say a thousand words. So sad to say good bye but such happy memories left behind.

    Dear Jamey—
Reading your tribute and looking at these wonderful photos, I can feel the huge loss to your family with Haley gone. —Even in just the photos, I can feel what happiness
    Haley brought!
Hope the good memories ease the pain for all of you—-Salem will need much comforting, to be sure!
    Thinking of you all,
    Anne
